Description

This is my late 90s Carvin 4x12 with Eminence 121460 speakers and Jensen Electric Lightning. The 121460s turned out to be lightweight, unmarked versions of the Legend V12s, and they sound every bit like them. This cab is like 60 lbs, max, with them. I absolutely adore these speakers because they have such a sweet top end and a full bodied midrange. They aren't moody about mics either--you can basically get a good sound with anything on them. As for the Jensen, I tried to make a separate post, but they ended up just piling in with the other. Thus, The Jensen files are marked with an "EL70" designation, so you can tell what I'm micing. These are very underrated speakers that have the body of a 25w Greenback with the growl of a T75. They are extremely modern sounding, dry, and crunchy as heck, perfect for downtuned and extended range brutality. I believe this cab was supposed to be paired with the Carvin MTS Anniversary amps. It's also known as the same model Jim Root used for the first Slipknot album. Possibly Iowa as well? Either way, stellar cabinet and it was insanely cheap. As far as the capture: cab>Hughes and Kettner Stompman (power amp)>Audient EVO 4 interface>. The software I used generates a full spectrum sweep (like the ones you hear when capturing on your modeler). I find this method to be more reliable and precise than doing the white noise "blip". Mics used are: Sennheiser e835 and e609, as well as the Mackie EM89D, which has become my go-to when I need one mic to get the job done. Gotta use some different stuff than the usual SM57, right? These captures turned out really well and I included some mic blends that sound best with modern amps and ones that seem to work best with the classics. Enjoy!
