Description

This is a boosted Orange CR120H through a stock Marshall Origin 2x12 Cab (Seventy80 speakers), captured with an SM57 and Rode NT1 Signature, both off axis and centered between the cone and edge. It is set up for a black metal album I am doing under the same name of Barren. All raw rig settings are: Boss SD-1 (o'clock) always on, Level 3, drive 9, tone 1:30 Dirt Channel (out of 10) Treb 7.5, Mid 4, Bass 4, Gain 6.8 Clean Channel (out of 10) Treb 8, Bass 8, Gain 6.5 Boss NS-2 fastest settings threshold just enough to stop hum with my guitar. Each mic was time aligned in Reaper and phase corrected with an all pass on the 57 to clean the top end harshness of the Seventy80s, and to somewhat mimic better mic combos (like a 57/MD421) The blended mics were then ran through an SSL Native 4KE channel strip for EQ and a touch of saturation, plus a tiny bit of leveling with the channel strip's compressor, then a clean eq to shave off the cab resonance around 2.3 kHz and 5k. Rhythm and lead has some multiband compression with SSL's G3 Multibus Comp to tame the low end and give the same tone and response I am using for the album. The EQ cuts a little of the low mids, typical high and low pass, a low shelf to tame the lows a little more and a high shelf to boost 1.2k and up for the mixed tones. This isn't a pristine or super tight modern high gain set up. It's fuzzy, fat, and tamed in post to fit the mix it was meant for, while leaving it's citrus character. It's unapologetically Orange. It also works well in death metal per my testing in a slam death track that used an amp sim for it's original tone. The preview guitars on T3k don't do it justice as their inputs don't match what I used for testing. I used a Scarlett 18i20 gen 3 set to inst on the input, with no added gain, peaking at about -6db with the hardest strums and no DI processing. Tested with a Jackson Pro Soloist loaded with Duncan Distortions.
