Description

I thought my first set of Mesa Traditional 4x12 IRs (Linked Tone on this page) could sound a bit too thick with certain amps and mic positions. For this group of IRs, I placed the mic back at 0.5" (1.27cm) and 1.0" (2.54cm) off the grille. I found that moving the mic back made some of the darker positions (1.0" to 2.0" from cap center) more usable to my ears. The decrease in proximity effect at the cap center was not as drastic for my tastes. I swept the mic from the cap center in 0.25" increments to 2" away from the center. I have all of my Mesa IRs in a single folder, so I can approximate moving the mic in 2 dimensions using my IR loader. If you are into scrolling for IRs, I recommend combining the sets for a bigger picture of the cab. I like the following starting points for my main high gain amps: Mesa Rectifier Modern Mode - 0.50” from cap Peavey 5150/6505 Lead - 0.75” from cap The Upper Left and Lower Left speakers are not as thick sounding. 24Bit 48kHz - 500ms - MPT Format Naming Convention V30 <speaker position> 4FB 4x12 SM57 <Distance from Center> <Distance Off Grill> <Off Axis Angle, if applicable> <Microphone Preamp> Speaker Positions are LL – lower left, LR – lower right, UL – upper left, UR – upper right Equipment Used: -Shure SM57 -Behringer A800 Power Amp -Stam SA-73 Microphone Preamp -CAPI VP28 Microphone Preamp -Steinberg UR824 Audio Interface -Voxengo Deconvolver 10sec sine sweeps were used to excite speaker
