Outboard Capture

Description

This tone capture was created using a vintage Yamaha MT3X cassette tape recorder, focusing on the character of its preamp and tape response. I recorded the preamp in eight different configurations to capture its tonal range: Flat EQ (neutral) High cut Low cut High boost Low boost High + low boost High boost + low cut Clipped input (to capture saturation behavior) In addition, I recorded a full frequency sweep onto cassette tape and transferred it into the DAW to capture the tape’s frequency response and coloration. Together, these captures represent both the tonal shaping of the MT3X preamp and the nonlinear characteristics of the tape medium, including saturation, compression, and high-frequency roll-off.
