Description

This capture was taken of the discontinued PF-112HLF 12" Ampeg Portaflex bass cabinet. Tweeter was off. The grill was removed so I could get the SM57 very close. Signal chain was impulse response utility > Tascam US 4x4 HR > Radial Pro-RMP > 30w class D power amp > PF-112HLF > SM57. Two captures were taken. The first capture is the SM-57 on axis with the cap at 1". The second was taken with the SM-57 at 45 degrees at the cap edge, 0.75" back (it was up in there). The Cap/On Axis IR has more transient and more top end. The Cap Edge/45 degree IR is a bit warmer/smoother, has more mids, and less transient. An SM-57 on a bass cab can be controversial due to it not being a sub monster -- rolling off completely from ~100hz down to 40hz. However, a more full-range DI capture in parallel will fill in those gaps, letting the cab's low-mid/mid character be sprinkled in as seasoning. (note on personal bias: I don't like kick mics on cabs).
