Description

Mesa Boogie .50 Caliber +, this one is the combo version with 6L6’s. Mics on opposite sides of the cap edge, one side is an sm57 and the other is an m160. The mics were captured at the same time. Amp settings are as photographed. I used an Ibanez Pentatone EQ in the amp’s FX loop. It’s there for two reasons: 1- to reduce the power amp’s output volume a little, and 2- where noted it has a bass boost. The combo’s cab and speaker (Black Shadow 12”) sound great but are a little light in bass when hearing it in the room. After having tried the models, I’ll probably stick with the non bass boosted version but they’re still here for you to play with if you like. The signal chain was sweep - Little Labs Redeye 3d Phantom (reamp) -> Boogie -> UA Apollo Twin mkII mic pre.

This is the amp that Fredrik Thorendal used for his leads back in the older albums. He would run it into a Rocktron juice extractor (signal chain was his own interpretation of Holdsworth's sound). This info was relayed to me by the man himself years ago in the Tandjent forum. He's playing through it at the end of this video: https://youtu.be/BGy7wiKA2Hg
