Description

I decided to make impulse responses of my Sansui RA-500 spring reverb. This reverb unit was typically used to add ambience to a home stereo system, like a lower class version of the Pioneer SR-202. The hum of the actual RA-500 is pretty bad, but the IRs strip all the noise away. The unit has a single control for reverb time. I've provided 4 settings, approximately from 0 to 10. T-2 = 9:00, T-5 = 12:00, T-8 = 3:00, T-10 = Max I captured the wet output of the reverb, so you'll need to blend in the dry output. I either use Cockos Reaverb or Logic Space Designer, which have by default keep the dry output at unity and set the wet output around -10 to -12dB. I've provided IRs with gain compensation (+12dB, +24dB) for this purpose. I have used these IRs on guitar amp and drums. The RA-500 doesn’t compare well to onboard guitar amp spring reverbs. I do like using the IRs on drums for some ambience. All IRs are 5 seconds long to capture the decay of the maximum reverb time. The shorter IRs could be trimmed to be shorter.

This is great! What a weird unit; I can't imagine people actually listening to their music through this. It looks fantastic though, and your captures are just begging to be used in my next mix! Thanx so much!
