Description

The Gonkulator is a two-in-one pedal from DOD (DigiTech): a ring modulator and a distortion in one box. The original, from the 1990s, is a cult favorite for its clangy, robotic sounds. It was built by combining DOD’s FX69 Grunge distortion circuit with a ring modulator, and its unlabeled-by-function knobs (Suck, Smear, Gunk and Heave) made it more of an experimental toy than a predictable pedal. The updated version, captured here, keeps that circuit, with improved components, but adds an adjustable carrier frequency and clearly labeled controls. Please note: This profile captures only the distortion half of the pedal. The ring modulator multiplies your signal by an internal oscillator, and NAM can’t model that, so the Ring control was turned down for every capture. What you get is the drive circuit on its own: a raw, aggressive grunge distortion with the Gonkulator’s character. **Controls** Gain (G): Sets the input gain into the distortion stage. Dist (D): Sets the amount of distortion. Output (V): Sets the output volume. Freq (F=0): Sets the carrier frequency of the ring modulator. It has no effect on this capture, since the ring modulator was turned down. Ring (R=0): Sets the ring modulator’s level. It was turned fully down for these captures. I dialed in some settings, including the ones from Andy's demo below which I recommend to watch. Some of them clean up nicely with guitar volume.
