Description

This Neural Amp Modeler capture profiles the EVH 5150 III S head loaded with EL34 power tubes, driven into the front end by a Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive as a tight-gain boost. The EL34 tube complement gives this capture a more compressed, midrange-forward character than the stock 6L6-loaded 5150 — think looser low end, a slightly softer top, and that classic British-voiced sag under palm mutes, compared to the more scooped, aggressive American EL34 alternative. The SD-1 in front does the heavy lifting for tightening up the low end and pushing the amp's input harder, which cleans up pick attack articulation on chugs while adding extra saturation and sustain on leads. Because the SD-1 rolls off some low end and adds mild clipping before the signal ever hits the amp, the resulting capture reads as more focused and less flubby under high-gain rhythm playing than a bare 5150 III S capture would, while still retaining the EVH's signature aggressive midrange growl. Typical use cases: modern metal/hard rock rhythm tones, tight palm-muted riffing, and boosted lead tones with extra compression and sustain. Pairs well in a NAM chain with a noise gate before the capture (given the amp's high-gain nature) and a cab IR — commonly a 4x12 with V30s — after it to complete the tone.
