Description

The Marantz 3020 is a vintage solid-state integrated amplifier celebrated for its warm, musical character and understated power. Released in the late 1970s, it embodied Marantz’s approach to hi-fi: clean circuitry, reliable build quality, and a tonal signature that leaned smooth and inviting rather than clinical. Its preamp section in particular earned a cult following among cassette enthusiasts who valued depth, clarity, and a touch of analog sweetness. It has been my number one machine for making mixtapes and tape duplicates at normal and high speed thanks to its stable output and forgiving yet detailed sound. I also love running microphones into it to record acoustic guitar because it captures transients and harmonics in a way that feels intimate without ever becoming sharp or brittle. This NAM capture was made direct using a tube preamp equipped with a NOS Brimar 12AU7 / ECC82 WA tube, adding extra harmonic texture. The resulting tone is dark and rich, excelling beautifully in the mid and high ranges.
