Description

The Standard SR-300 is a compact mono reel to reel tape recorder produced around 1970 in Japan by Standard Radio Corp. It was designed as a simple, rugged consumer machine with straightforward controls, full-track mono recording, and modest specifications that lean intentionally lo fi rather than high fidelity. Its transport, head configuration, and electronics deliver a focused and characterful bandwidth, making it known more for personality than precision. It is a fun and grainy device that gives unbeatable midrange on solo instruments and even final productions. It’s a mono delight with an obvious but charming noise floor, much like the crackle of a well-kept vinyl record, and its texture adds an unmistakable sense of character to anything run through it. This capture was made direct using a tube preamp equipped with a NOS Brimar 12AU7 / ECC82 WA tube. The result is a mid-heavy, overdriven delight.
