Description

The King of Tone is one of the most talked-about overdrive pedals ever built. Analogman describes it as either the most hyped or the most desired boost/overdrive/distortion on the market, and people have waited on its order list for years. It’s handbuilt in the USA by Mike Piera, and the V4 is the current version. This capture is of the red side with the High Gain option that Analogman offers as an extra, which gives about 20% more gain than the standard version, so you get a bit more crunch, a bit more sustain and a lot more attitude. It also makes the lower half of the gain range more usable than in the standard version. The King of Tone is really two pedals in one box. Each side has its own Volume, Drive and Tone controls, plus its own LED (yellow and red). It’s also tweakable, with an internal treble boost knob for each side and a four-position DIP switch to set the mode, either clean boost, overdrive or distortion. The high gain red side is a favorite for sustaining lead tones, and is well suited to blues, rock and anything in between that wants a bit more bite. It’s primarily a low to medium gain pedal, so it’s an overdrive that happens to go further, and not a metal pedal in disguise. The standard A2 NAM files provided here are exports from the experimental parametric NAM profile, I made for this pedal (linked below) and can be used as usual. You can also go ahead and download the parametric .pnam file from the linked profile, run it through the parametric NAM plugin and export standard NAM files for any drive/tone/volume knob configuration (find link to the plugin below). **Controls (red side, as captured)** Drive (D): Sets the amount of gain. The knob goes a long way, at very high settings you may hear some fizz. The high gain mod seems to reduce it. Tone (T): Shapes the brightness. Volume (V): Sets the output level for the red side. Mode (internal DIP switch): Selects boost, overdrive or distortion for the red side. Here, overdrive was selected throughout. Internal treble boost (P): A hidden trimmer inside the pedal that adds high-frequency content to the side it belongs to. Here it was set constantly to 2.
