Description

GRIM 6505 COLD-CLIP PREAMP - NAM capture ========================================= WHAT IT IS ---------- A Neural Amp Modeler capture of a Peavey 5150 / 6505 lead-channel PREAMP with "grim" cold- clipper mods (Ola Englund / Fortin-style voicing). *** Preamp only. NO cab, NO power amp. This is a DI capture. *** Run a guitar DI through it and stack a cab IR (and, if you want, a power-amp capture) after it. Built from a hand-modeled circuit, not a capture of real hardware: - 4x 12AX7 gain stages (Norman Koren triode model) into a cold-biased cathode-follower "cold clipper" - Stock 22 nF interstage coupling caps for a genuine 5150 low end - Grim mods: colder V2B clipper bias, interstage attenuators in front of the two hard-clipping stages, 5150 FMV tone stack, and a TS-style front-boost voicing block - Captured at the "a220" operating point (mild interstage attenuation, GAIN ~0.6), dialed in by ear against a reference 6505 preamp+power DI - Standard WaveNet, aggregate ESR ~0.019 RECOMMENDED RIG --------------- 1. BOOST IN FRONT. Use a Tube Screamer / SD-1 style overdrive (TS808, TS9, or a NAM / plugin of one) ahead of this model. The preamp was captured hitting its front end fairly hard, so a boost tightens the low end and sharpens the pick attack. Classic settings: DRIVE low, LEVEL high, TONE to taste. 2. THIS NAM. 3. CAB: Mesa 4x12 Oversized ("OS") + SM57. That is exactly what this preamp was voiced against. A York Audio "MES 412 OS" SM57 impulse is a direct match; any solid Mesa OS V30 4x12 + SM57 IR will land in the same place. 4. Your usual post EQ / bus chain as needed. DIALING NOTES ------------- - Tight, aggressive voice. Want more low-end thump? Ease off the boost, or use a "mix" IR with more body. - Too raw up top? A darker 57 IR or a gentle high cut around 8-10 kHz. - Responds to pick dynamics; roll the guitar volume back for a lower-gain crunch. CREDITS ------- - Reference 5150 / 6505 circuit + LiveSPICE files: 83ennu - thank you, this was built on top of your work - 12AX7 triode model: Norman Koren - Circuit modeling, voicing, NAM training: edgiljr5 =========================================
