Description

It was good enough for Mick Ronson, so it's surely good enough for you. A poor(er) man's Hiwatt? A bipolar Marshall? A sassy Laney? A massive Vox? All of them? Well, AP does stand for "all-purpose", so I guess they did their job! This is amp is a BEAST and it comes in a fitting red and black oversized housing (widest amp I've seen) I made a video on it and it's connection to David Bowie and Mick Ronson around the time they made and toured Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, though live appearances span from around Hunky Dory to Aladdin Sane. I saw someone suggest that you hear Bowie playing through one on "Panic in Detroit" and "Cracked Actor", and it doesn't seem unlikely. Ronson was most known for using modified Marshall Majors, but amps like this one accompanied them on tour, and at least one producer of Bowie's claimed it was used on Ziggy. It has two channels, "Normal" and "Brilliant", they have their own treble-, bass- and volume controls and a shared presence control and a master volume. Without pushing the master volume, the amp stays clean up until 10 on both channels. It's rated at 100w with four EL34s, and speaker outputs that are switchable between 7.5 and 15 ohms (commonly referred to as 8 and 16 today, they used the actual readings back in the day), so the amp can (probably) take a load from 4 to 16 ohms depending on the switch, since it has two output jacks that are presumably parallel. The frequency response of the amp reaches both extreme lows and extreme highs, though the "Brilliant" channel cuts out quite a bit of low end. Our bass player has been playing through the "Normal" channel during practice and a few gigs, and it works wonders! The clean headroom allows for extreme dynamics compared to most common tube amps you find out in the world today.
