Description

Splawn Quick Rod – Recording Chain Description The Splawn Quick Rod was recorded through an 80s-era Marshall 4×12 cabinet loaded with a matched quartet of well-worn Celestion Vintage 30 speakers, chosen for their broken-in character, tight low end, aggressive upper-midrange, and smooth high-frequency response. The cabinet delivers the classic punch and growl associated with modern high-gain recordings while retaining the organic feel of a heavily played vintage enclosure. The cabinet was captured using a Shure SM57 paired with a Royer R-121 ribbon microphone, blending the strengths of both microphones into a balanced, mix-ready tone. Shure SM57: Positioned approximately 1 inch from the grille cloth, aimed at the edge of the speaker's dust cap to capture aggressive attack, upper-mid cut, and articulate pick definition. Royer R-121 Ribbon: Positioned approximately 8 inches from the cabinet, aligned with the same speaker and slightly off-axis to capture warmth, body, low-end fullness, and the natural depth of the cabinet. Both microphones were routed directly into a MOTU UltraLite-mk5, utilizing its transparent, low-noise microphone preamps and high-headroom converters. The interface was configured to record at 24-bit / 96 kHz, preserving the amplifier's dynamics and harmonic complexity without additional EQ, compression, or processing. Microphone phase was carefully aligned before recording, with the final blend consisting of approximately: 78% SM57 22% Royer R-121 This combination delivers the unmistakable Splawn Quick Rod sound—tight, percussive low end, aggressive midrange bite, articulate pick attack, and a full, three-dimensional cabinet response. The resulting tone is ideal for modern hard rock and metal, while still retaining the raw character and harmonic richness that made hot-rodded Marshall-style amplifiers legendary.
