Description

The 1970s IREL 10 inch ceramic speaker captures a very different type of European character. It is punchy, forward and slightly aggressive, with a tight low end and a clear midrange that works extremely well with overdriven guitar tones. This 20 watt, 4 ohm Italian unit was recorded in fully working condition and preserves the tone of a beloved era. All microphones listed above were used to record the speaker. The range of years and origins gives this ceramic driver a very broad tonal representation. Japanese studio dynamics, West German precision microphones, early European consumer mics and modern condensers all present the speaker in different but complementary ways. The result is an unusually complete portrait of a vintage Italian ceramic unit. The speaker was conditioned with white, pink and brown noise for one hour, followed by short sine wave checks to track cone behavior. A 30 second sine sweep was used for capture. The chain consisted of a neutral preamp, a linear power amplifier and the Fosi Audio V1.0G. All microphones were powered with the MIC500 USB and its Brimar 12AU7 WA tube. Noise removal was used sparingly. Processing was identical to the first pack. Normalization was set to minus 3 dB before deconvolution, DC offset was removed, and Voxengo Deconvolver with MP Transform generated the IR files. Final normalization reached minus 0.3 dB. This ensures consistent levels and reliable phase behavior without altering the natural color of the IREL ceramic driver.
