Description

Controls: B - Bass M - Middle T - Treble Br - Brightness Switch S - Sound Effect Button 1-3 The Manufacturer: ELK amplifiers were built in Japan by Miyuki Industrial Co. They originally started building tube amplifiers in 1953 under the name "Echo" before transitioning to the ELK brand name in the 1960s. The Transistion: In the very early 1970s, Miyuki stopped production, and the brand was taken over by Hoshino Gakki (the parent company of Ibanez). The 1973 Debut: Hoshino Gakki overhauled the lineup, turning the solid-state "Viking Bass" into a flagship series. If you look at the 1973/1974 Ibanez and ELK product catalogs, this exact amplifier appears fully styled as a sleek, solid-state beast. The "Sound Effect" Push-Buttons: In 1970s Japanese engineering, this was a premium feature—essentially an analogue preset EQ matrix. Instead of just tweaking the knobs, you could pop these buttons to instantly kick in factory-tuned midrange scoops or low-end boosts. Dual Volume Controls: It features both a standard Volume and a Master Vol. control. This means even though it's solid-state, you can crank the initial volume stage to try and push the preamp into a bit of vintage grit, then use the Master Volume to keep it at a bedroom-friendly level. The Tube-Style Switches: Even though Hoshino Gakki moved this series to solid-state tech, they kept the classic Stand By toggle switch next to the Power toggle. On a solid-state amp, a standby switch is mostly a luxury to silently mute the output without shutting down the whole unit—a great nod to old-school tube amp workflows.
