Description

The Orange SP212 from the Smartpower series was introduced in 2010, together with the first version of the Terror Bass 500 amp head. I bought this compact yet powerful set and have used it as my main setup ever since. There are a few remarkable features to this cab: - It features 2x12" speakers and doesn't use a tweeter, which makes the mids an highs sound a little more 'guitarish' than most bass cabs, especially those available back then. Works great with overdrive bass tones. - The two speakers in this cab are placed *behind* each other instead of side by side, both pointing forward. I know of no other bass cab that uses this setup, but correct me if I'm wrong. This construction (it's called 'isobaric') makes the back speaker support the front speaker in terms of sound pressure and overall chunkiness, which makes this cab sound bigger than it actually is. I usually aim for a bass tone that's in between guitar and bass and almost never play entirely clean. This cab has alway worked great for that. I basically made this model as a fancy speaker capture; the amp I used was selected for the highest clean headroom and most neutral EQ of everything I could find to use for this. It's a GRBass Pocket 50, a very clean and pure sounding little head from Italy, its EQ knobs set to neutral/noon. Listening to it now, I actually quite like the soundon its own (without capture of my Terror Bass head in front of it I mean). It's squeaky clean of course, but the cab gives it a cool vibe that could make it come in handy sometime. Hope you like it too. I captured the cab with a Shure SM57 aimed directly at the center of the speaker, one finger's width from the grill gloth. In case you'd miss some lows: I made a lows-only capture, to add in parallel if you'd want to. Captured with exactly the same settings as the main model, but with a low pass filter at 80Hz going into the amp (so before the input, 6dB/oct) No post processing was done, other than normalizing the 'wet' file at -5dBTP.
