Description

This is an old Sanyo Answering machine from the eigthies (I believe). It's based around a double cassette deck, one for the answer message and one to record and playback ingoing messages. It's based around a microcontroller, and two chips: one is the power amp/motor and solenoid driver for the tape decks and the other one manages tape head preamplification, automatic level control and other phone related stuff (beep tone detection voice detection and so on). It has been modified adding an input straight into the ingoing messages deck tape head, an output from the little onboard speaker (rated 0.4w into 8 ohm), a little modification to keep the preamp always on and a little mod to the Automatic level control to respond a little faster and in a controllable way. This unit is actually capable of really extreme compression and sustain, but I'm new to the profiling/capturing scene and I couldn't capture the most wild artifacts, I still found this models quite interesting. The captures have been made with a MOTU m2 as usual, and with various output levels from the audio interface, as it's said by the numbers 1 to 4 ranging from 25 to 90% range of the output knob. It has been captured with both Automatic level control off and on, it should offer subtle dynamic nuances. Enjoy!
